I sang at a Hell’s Angels wedding in the States
WHEN Liza Starlight is invited to a wedding she never has to worry about what to wear.
She just throws on her Shirley Bassey, Whitney Houston or Celine frocks.
Liza, 35, has been singing at weddings for the past 15 years, though her singing career began when she was 14.
Liza, from Pencoedcae, near Pontypridd, says: “At wedding parties, you have kids and grannies, so my tributes appeal to everyone. Every wedding is different from the last one, apart from you’ve always got a bride and groom!
“I don’t always do a tribute act. I once did a Hell’s Angels wedding in America five years ago and sang The Power of Love. Someone saw me perform there and later booked me for their friends’ wedding anniversary in Wapa-koneta in America. I had to hide out in the basement while they showed a video of me singing Show Me Heaven, and then I appeared to sing it in person. They couldn’t believe it! I introduced myself with a very Welshy accent because they love all that out there.”
Never short of an adventure, Liza, who presents on Brynmawr Radio FM and once auditioned for Pop Idol to be told she had “too many sequins”, once had to borrow the hostess’s clothes at a wedding party in Llantwit Major.
Liza says: “It was a lovely do in a very posh canopy tent in the grounds. I’d been booked as Shirley Bassey but thought my roadie Graham had picked up my costume, and he thought I had. The hostess took me upstairs to pick something from her wardrobe to wear!
“Most performances have been part of the evening reception, though I’ve also been part of some ceremonies.”
My Heart Will Go On from Titanic or Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You are some of Liza’s more popular requests. Liza, who is engaged to Andy Martin, who supports/manages her career, says: “We haven’t set a date but I want all the horse and cart and princess-y touches. I don’t think I’ll sing at my wedding – I’ll want the day off. I’ll try and hire Barbra Streisand!
“I’ve done some lovely weddings in Llechwen Hall near Pontypridd and Cleddau Bridge Hotel in Pembroke. And I’m performing at a wedding in March in West Monmouthshire Golf Club in Nantyglo where I’ll sing The Power of Love.
“Lots of people ask for one of my own recordings, My Everything, as it also carries a wedding message in the lyrics. It goes, ‘When I reach for you, you are there.
“You lift me when I’m down’ and ‘Now I feel like my life begins and I can hardly wait’.
“Simon Cowell may hate cabaret, but that’s my job.”
